Bull Terriers

Did you nose October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month? Hi Dot & Jerry Underfoot here to Meow Now on why this is impawrtant to understand & to share with others.

First, let’s get it straight, “Pit bull” is not a single, distinct breed. It is an umbrella term that typically includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, & various mixed-breed dogs with similar physical traits.

Secondly, let’s debunk some of the common myths around these pawsome dogs. Pit bulls do not have “locking jaws”, nor do they pawssess the most pawerful bite force among dogs & temperament depends (like any other dog) on individual training, socialization & environment rather than a blanket breed trait.

Bully breeds make up a large pawrcentage of shelter pawpulations & face higher rates of length-of-stay & breed-specific legislation (BSL) restrictions. Organizations like the Pit Bulls for Life Foundation of Alberta work locally to rescue, rehabilitate, & rehome these dogs across Canada. As well there are also many organizations in the USA such as The American Pit Bull Foundation.

Our beautiful fur sister Olivia was pawrt Bull Terrier & the dog on our logo, Chelsey was a Bull Terrier. Although not a Pit Bull they do share common ancestry with pit-bull-type dogs & some local municipal laws, rental restrictions, or insurance policies loosely group all bully-type or muscular breeds under a broad “pit bull” definition. Another reason to End BSL.

Our fur sister Olivia also shared many pawtastic blog post on National Pit Bull Awareness Month which you can read by pawing this link. She talks about the when it started & who started it. As well as what you can do to help. Olivia also wrote wagnificent blog post about BSL – Breed Specific Legislation which at our house we all disagree with it paws down. Olivia wrote ‘About Breed Specific Legislation‘, Replace BSL with C-TAG, & shared a pawtastic blog post about Artist Dean Russo highlighting his Pit bull work.
