Music is truly a universal language. This isn’t lost on a dog. Just like us, dogs can enjoy & benefit from listening to music. A quick search on YouTube or Spotify will dig up many selections of music intended for dogs.

There’s quite a bit of anecdotal evidence of dogs responding to & even expressing preferences towards different kinds of music. Dogs appear to focus on melodies & harmonies but not so much on the beat or tempo. Obviously a dog would find a String Quartet more appealing than say, Thrash Metal.

The composer who wrote “Pomp & Circumstance” was fond of a bulldog that was said to growl at choir members who fell out of tune. Richard Wagner had a special stool in his study for his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, named “Peps,” to sit on. As Wagner composed he kept his eyes on the dog & changed musical phrases based upon how the dog reacted. Wagner noticed that Peps responded differently to melodies depending upon their musical keys. Thus certain passages in one key might cause an occasional calm tail wag, while passages in other keys might arouse an excited response.

If you’ve ever been to a shelter or Humane Society you might have noticed soft or classical music playing over the PA. A shelter can be a very loud & stressful place so many shelters will play calming music to help relax the dogs. A 2012 Colorado State University study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that dogs were more likely to sleep & less likely to bark when Mozart, Beethoven & other classical artists were playing.
