Few of us Felines & Canines Like Rain ~ Here’s Why

Canine Culture, Cat Culture

Rainy days can be cozy for our humans, but us cats & dogs aren’t fans of wet weather. Ever wondered why?

Hi Dot & Jerry Underfoot here.  It’s pouring outside & huMom tells us the entire week could be wet.  We thought we would MeowNow on what rainy days feel like for us furry furiends & why most of us would rather stay dry indoors.

Us cats & dogs  experience the world through heightened senses that make rain much more intense for us. The sound of rain can be loud & pawsitively unsettling, not to mention the smell of wet earth or stormy air is stronger than what our humans notice. For some of us furleggers, this sensory overload is overwhelming & dog gone unpleasant, especially when paired with the strange sensation of wet paws & fur; yikes!

Most furleggers, especially us cats, dislike having wet fur. When our fur gets soaked, it can feel heavy, cold, & pawsitively uncomfortable. It also takes away some of our agility, making us feel less safe or ready to react if needed. Our dog friends can feel similar discomfort, & both of us may hesitate or refuse to go outside when it’s raining, even for a short walk.  Dot & I are indoor cats so not a problem for us but our fursister Olivia would refuse to go for her business meetings.  HuMom would try to convince her to go out using Olivia’s beach umbrella; it worked sometimes.

Some of us associate rain with  nasty negative experiences, like scary storms or loud thunder, & may feel anxious or try to hide at the first hint of moisture or noise. Over time, these associations reinforce their dislike of rain.  Our furbrother Eddy was wagnificently terrified of storms.  HuMom would give him a double dose of Omega Alpha‘s EnduraStress to help him calm down & rest. It’s pawsome for cats too.

Not all of us cats & dogs are the same. Some breeds are naturally more tolerant of rain thanks to their ancestry & physical traits, while others have never lived in wet environments & just aren’t used to it. Our backgrounds, previous life experiences, & individual personalities all play a part.

Many of us outdoor felines will find shelter before a storm hits, hiding under cars, bushes, or inside outdoor shelters designed to keep them cozy & dry.

Our canine friends may seek safe spots indoors or look to our humans for comfort until the weather clears up.

Next time rain clouds gather & we furleggers give the door a suspicious look, remember: it’s not just fussiness—it’s instinct, comfort, & those sensitive senses working overtime!

Have a purrfect week!

Remember to be gnawsome, be kind & stay safe.
