Next week, May 19th we Canadians will celebrate Victoria Day & we nose our American neighbours will be celebrating Memerial Day the following week on the 26th of May.

These howlidays always include a tradition of the lighting of fireworks.  We live rurally & many humans come up this way to spend their Spring & Summer days at their cottages & often light fireworks off their decks or in their yards.  So today we want to remind everyone that most of us good fur, feather & fin beings do not like fireworks.

Fireworks are very loud & sound like thunder or guns to good dogs, cats  & wild critters. Running away or trying to hide from the noise is a survival instinct. We just want to get away from those awful sounds. A terrified cat or dog will run away given the chance. Pounds & shelters often see an increase in animals after firework displays.

Alternatives to fireworks include drone light shows, laser light displays, & even confetti poppers & silly string. These options offer visual spectacle & excitement without the loud noises & environmental impact associated with traditional fireworks. 

If you are celebrating with fireworks I would like to suggest you keep your meowsome cat, good dog or bird home & inside where it will feel safe; preferably not alone. Be sure to close the windows to lessen the sound. If your cat or dog feels safe in a covered crate or under the bed, then by all means give them the option. Dot told me her late furriend Micky Moo used to hide in the bathtub. We watched Eddy get so worked up he would have accidents in the house & paces quickly until he was exhausted.

Other meowsome ways to keep your pawsome cat or dog calm is by putting your cat (if they will let you) & good dog in it’s Thundershirt before the fireworks begin. They also have other calming pawducts but we have only used their Thundershirts. You could also use Feliway for Cats or Adaptil for Dogs to calm your precious fur leggers; we used both.
