We loves when you ask us questions.  This says to us that you trust us to help you make the best decision for your good dog(s) & cat(s).  We pawsitively feel that sharing knowledge is a wagnificent way to show we care.  This week I’m yapping about how to keep your good dog & cat safe & the signs that they may be suffering from heat stroke during these hotter months.

Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting & by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the air & sidewalk (or beach) can heat up to high temperatures that make it difficult for animals to cool themselves. This can lead to a dangerous condition, heat stroke.

Dogs can also risk overheating if exercised outside during the day in hot weather. When it’s very hot, my huMom schedules my walks for early morning & evening when it’s cooler & she always remembers to bring water. She also lets me rest if I need to & even has taken to carrying a sun umbrella.

If your furbulous feline goes outside be sure to have fresh water available & that they have a shady spot to go to.  It’s also good to time their outings so they are shorter  & can come back inside where it is cooler.

For those who do not nose the common symptoms of heat stroke:

  • Exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting)
  • rapid or erratic pulse
  • salivation (drooling)
  • anxious or staring expression
  • weakness, muscle tremors or lack of coordination
  • tongue & lips red (which may eventually turn bluish in color)
  • convulsions or vomiting
  • collapse, coma & death

If you think your dog or cat, or any dog or cat you encounter may be suffering from heat stroke you need to get them cooled down as fast as possible. Get them into the shade or inside. Wet the dog with cool water. Put them near a fan or grab a magazine & fan them vigorously to promote evaporation. If possible, take the dog’s temperature. Place cool wet towels over the neck, under the armpits & between the hind legs. Don’t apply ice, it will constricts blood flow which will slow the cooling down process. Allow the dog or cat to drink some cool water but don’t force it. Take the dog or cat to a veterinarian as soon as possible to be checked out.

    Many thanx Olivia! Today iss Fursday an iss rainin ‘kittiess an poochiess’ outside! All THE treess an plantss an grass are happy! As are wee.
    It has kewled off a bit which iss nice. Butt iss too heavy rain to sit out inn Condo 😉

    Thanx so much fore such a grate post Olivia. BellaSita was wurried mee had Heet Stroke! Butt mee has NOT gone outside. Iss too **hot** an so hue-mid. Plus THE smoke from Wildfiress iss still heer……
    BellaSita changess mee water an putss an ice cube inn both water bowlss. That iss a nice xtra.
    Mee has mee own fan inn livin room on THE floor so mee can sprawl out inn front of it an kewl off.
    Wee allso have a tabell fan that wee use when inn bedroom. With blackout drapess closed til nitefall; it has stayed reesonablee pleasant inn heer!
    Mee not wild ’bout Summertime. Neether iss BellaSita. Wee are more yore Autumn Girlss 😉
