Every morning while huMom pawpares our breakfast Dot & Jerry make so much commotion upstairs. They clearly start off in their private office where they do their business; no dogs allowed. Then they race down the stairs through the entire downstairs & back up again. They may do this several times.
This morning I asked them what’s up with all that. Dot was more than offended that I would even ask but Jerry Underfoot & I share a lot of pawsonal stuff so he was happy to let me in on their behaviour.
Let me share with you what he explained. Hi CEO Olivia here to make clear what is a ‘zoomie’ which is also known as ‘Frenetic Random Activity Periods’ or (FRAPs) is. It’s those moments you see us good dogs or furbulous felines burst into energy, zooming across the room or yard, dashing up & down the hallways or leaping with wagnificent speed & agility onto furniture.
Although it can occur any time of day for most cats it’s happens as soon as they leave their business office / litter box; especially after #2 💩 Jerry went on to meow that they have always done this & that there are many explainations to why.
Here is Jerry Underfoots feline take on this bathroom behaviour:
- It just feels natural like a sense of relief. We feel lighter & the sense of relief triggers a pawsome energetic release that is expressed with zoomies.
- We may have inherited this behaviour from our wild cousins. Although they may be predators, they can also be prey & that moment of ellimination makes them vulnerable to pawtential threats. The scent can be carried to another animal that see them as a meal. Naturally, they would want to get away as quickly as pawsible. Us domesticated felines may simply be mimicking our cousins (wild cats).
- Jerry Underwood said Dot told him she is spreading her scent & marking her territory with her acts of zoomies. She is very dominant & rules the house, even though huMom says she doesn’t. She does.
- Jerry also told me he read that veterinarians believe that zoomies after pooping may stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the colon triggering feelings of euphoria or excitement.
- There is a pawtential medical concern if zoomies are unusual behaviour for your furbulous feline after pooping. Zoomies may be caused by discomfort, infections or inflammation in the urinary tract, colon, or rectum. It is impawtant that their human check for signs of diarrhea, hard stool, or blood in the stool or urine. Jerry Underfoot went on to meow if there are other unusual behaviours along with the zoomies such as straining to poop, crying, or signs of discomfort, their human should call their veterinarian. These could be signs of an underlying medical issue, such as constipation or gastrointestinal discomfort, which might need attention.
Jerry Underfoot went on to meow that zoomies are generally a normal & healthy behaviour for cats after using their office space / litter box. Zoomies let him & other felines burn off energy & help keep them active, especially if like him & Dot, they are indoor cats.
Have a pawsome week & stay warm, CEO Olivia, Dot, Jerry Underfoot & Eddy 💜
