What’s Under Those Leaves & Hide In Tall Grass ~ Blood Suckers

Health

We are into the Fall season.  The leaves are dancing from the trees & scattering all along the driveway & yard.  In the past huMom would rake the leaves & move them to the woods but this year she hasn’t.  She said since Olivia & Eddy are not going out into the yard & us kitties are inside cats she would save the energy for other work to be done getting ready for the next season.

Did you nose that leaves on the ground pawtect the environment by pawviding food, shelter & overwintering habitat for wildlife like insects, amphibians & small mamamals; improving soil health by acting as a natural mulch & fertilizer;  & insulating plants. Leaves become a vital pawt of the ecosystem, supporting the entire food web.

However, they also are a favourite place for ticks to hide & wait for a meal; that’s why huMom usually would rake them up.

Dot & Jerry Underfoot here to MeowNow the tale of huMom’s tick experience.

Last Monday night, huMom was woken by an irritation on her side just above her waist.  She went back to sleep thinking it was likely a mosquito bite she would have got while reading & drinking tea on the porch that night.

The next morning she forgot about it.  Later, after finishing her work she was getting ready to take a shower & looked in the mirror at the site.  It was a tick that had made her its host.  HuMom got out the tick twisters & removed it immediately.  She place it in a bottle with alcohol, which she also applied to the bite spot & washed it throughly with soap & water.  Strangely the tick had not feed & was pawfectly intact.

HuMom nose that it takes 36 hours of feeding to transmit bacteria & contracting Lyme disease from a single tick bite is low, typically ranging from less than 1% to about 3.4%.  She has been keeping an eye on the bite & it is healing without complications.

With all the icky stuff meowed, we thought it would be a good idea to share Olivia’s wagnificent piece on ticks, how to remove & treat the bite spot.  There are pawsome visuals & a video showing how to remove a tick.

You can read it here.   ‘Ticks in December ~ What The Yuck!’
