What Is Your Good Dog’s PH?

Health

Back in July of this year I barked about UTIs & Good Dogs.   You may remember that most UTIs dogvelop in the bladder, but can also begin in the kidneys, ureters, or urethra. The culprit almost half the time is E. coli bacteria, which can migrate from a dog’s genitals, perineum, or rectum, upwards into the bladder. But UTIs can also be caused by a poor diet, or medications that throw off the body’s pH.  Hello, CEO Olivia here today to dogscuss the canine body’s pH.

Wikipedia yaps, ‘In chemistry, pH is a scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. Acidic solutions are measured to have lower pH values than basic or alkaline solutions. The pH scale is logarithmic & inversely indicates the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution.’

Recently I dogveloped an infection that required a 2 week dosing of 250mg Clavaseptin every 12 hours for 14 days. Saturday was my last pill.  HuMom feed me lots of coconut yogurt & as always I get Omega Alpha Probiotic 8 in my meals.  This helped in avoiding any nasty doggy gut issues but I dogress.  Moving forward we will collect & take a new urine sample to my Veterinarian clinic to ensure the infection has been pawsitively cleared up.  In the meantime, huMom pawchase a booklet of pH test strips at the pharmacy last week & she tested my urine this morning.

The normal pH for dog urine is around 6 to 6.5.  A pH of 7.0 is neutral (neither acid nor alkaline).  A “high pH” refers to something above 7.0 & is considered alkaline.  A “low pH” is something under 7.0 & is considered acidic.

Let’s keep in mind a high pH can make a good dog more prone to UTIs but a high pH can also be the result of an infection. Some dogs chronically ( dosplained constantly reoccurring) produce alkaline (high pH) urine, & therefore may be more prone to chronic infections. Other dogs with persistent low pH urine (too acidic) are dog gone prone to oxalate crystals. This pH balance is very impawtant to good health & huMom was happy to read that my test strip read a pawfect 6.5.

    1. Agreed, cranberry extract is the way to go. We always try natural first. There is dogfinitely something about seasonal changes & UTIs. HuMom has been seeing this since her days as an Animal Care Supervisor in Toronto. Sending pawsitive energy & strength to Elsa 🐾💜🐾
