Hello once again, CEO Olivia here. On hot days like we’ve been having, I love to dip my paws in a cool river. But the truth is, I don’t like it if I can’t touch bottom. Some dogs, like Suzie Q, love swimming & are very good at it.

It’s important to be safe & smart around water. A dog should get some swimming lessons because as I said, not all of us are naturals at it. The younger your good dog is when you teach him or her to swim, the better. Keep the lesson short, positive & as stress-free as possible.

Here are some tips:

• Choose a quiet, shallow spot in the water for your lessons.
• Keep your dog on a leash while he or she is learning.
• Get in the water with your dog, let them know this is a fun thing to share.
• Start at the edge of the water & stay as long as he or she enjoys it.
• never force your dog into the water if he or she doesn’t want to go.
• Never throw your dog into the water.

When at the beach, try not to let your dog drink the water, especially if its salt water ( not always easy). Drinking lake or river water might cause stomach issues & drinking salt water can be fatal, so always have fresh water with you.

If you go out on a boat, always bring a bright colored life jacket for your good dog. I have my own life jacket or flotation device. It’s designed for us dogs so after some minor adjustments, it fits me right. It’s brightly colored so I’m easy to spot & it has a ring to hook my leash to as well as a handle should I ever need to be lifted out of the water quickly. Life jackets save lives.

If you have a swimming pool at home be sure to have a fence around it to keep your dog out when it isn’t time to swim. Be sure your dog has an easy way to get in & out of the pool such as steps or a doggie ramp. Also be sure the water isn’t too cold because not all dogs can cope with really cold water.

Just as you would with a small child, it’s important to have an eye on your good dog at all times when playing near or in the water. It can only take a moment for a dog to find itself in trouble. Also don’t over do it, a dog can tire before you do. Allow rest time, under a shady tree perhaps.

After swim time it’s a good idea to rinse your good dog in clean water. Be sure to gently dry the ears as well. By being smart & prepared, we can all have a safe, fun time at the beach or by the pool.
