Hello again, CEO Olivia here. I’ve been trying to over come my fear of cats. They say knowledge is power so I’ve been sniffing out what I can about these strange creatures. While doing so, I discovered a rare & unusual type of cat called a polydactyl cat. They are born with what is called a double paw mutation. Typically, cats have 18 toes, five on their front paws & four on the back. Polydactyl cats have extras. My huMom knew a cat named Julius who had 12 toes on each foot.
These cats are sometimes called “Hemingway cats,” because the famous writer Ernest Hemingway had a penchant for polydactyl cats. They were also favored by sailors because it was believed the extra toes & claws made for extra efficient mousers. They are seen all over the world as a result but are most often seen in western England, Wales, the eastern U.S. & Canada.
Polydactylism is a genetic mutation & can occur in any type of cat. It occurs more often in Maine Coon cats than other breeds but polydactyl cats are not considered a breed themselves.
I’m kind of glad that Dottie & Jerry have the regular amount of toes & claws. But I wonder if they had extras, would that mean they would have extra fun with their Knotty Bon Bons? I should ask them…just need to work up the nerve.
