Hello everyone, CEO Olivia here. I doubt anyone needs to be reminded of what anniversary it is today. Across the United States, people are stopping to remember & pay tribute to those who died needlessly & the brave first responders who gave their lives in the aid of others.
Today, I want to pay tribute to three of the service dogs that worked ground zero in the hours & days that followed. They have all passed on now, but we should never forget them.
Bretagne (pronounced Brit-nee) was two years old at the time of the attacks. She & Denise Corliss, her owner & handler, worked at Ground Zero for 10 days as their mission went from rescue to recovery.
Bretagne retired from formal search work at 9-years old, but continued to work as a goodwill ambassador for her local fire department, & as a reading assistance dog at a local elementary school. When she died last year, she was the last of the 9/11 service dogs.
Appollo & his handler, Peter Davis, arrived at the World Trade Center site just 15 minutes after the attack, making Appollo the first search & rescue dog to arrive after the collapse of the towers. At one point, Appollo was almost killed by flames & falling debris. However, he survived, having been drenched after falling into a pool of water just before this incident. Appollo started working again as soon as Davis brushed the debris off him.
Trakr, a German Shepherd seen here with Canadian Police officer James Symington, discovered the last survivor of the attack at the World Trade Center. Genelle Guzman-McMillan was making her way down the stairs in the South Tower when the building collapsed around her. After being trapped for 27 hours beneath the concrete & rubble, Trakr alerted firefighters to her whereabouts.
There were dozens of other good dogs involved in the rescue & recovery at ground zero. All deserve to be remembered & honored for their selfless work.
