What does Probiotic & A Healthy GI Have To Do With Our Physical, Mental & Emotional Health

Health

We hear a lot of yapping about the gut & it’s part in the well being of us good dogs & cats. That’s because new evidence points to the impawtance of a healthy GI & it’s role in our physical, mental & emotional health.  Hi, CEO Olivia here to talk about the gut, stress, diarrhea & the impawtance of probiotics in our diet.

Our digestive tract is the largest immune organ in our body, & it is home to a wooftastic population of bacteria. These pawsome & beneficial bacterial not only assist in maintaining healthy levels of friendly bugs in our gut, but they also dogscourage bad bacteria from our gastrointestinal tract (GI) which can cause GI issues & or other health problems.

New studies are proving the impawtance of good bacteria & bad bacteria in regards to our digestion & coping with stress.  A 2019 study concluded that adding bacteria Bacillus subtilis to ultra processed dog food improves fat & carbohydrate digestibility in the gut & resulted in a “higher quality” poop along with healthier levels of ammonia in the digestive tract. Image the benefits of a healthy diet that included unprocessed pre-biotic foods, fermented foods that naturally contain beneficial bacteria & a pawsome probiotic such as Probiotic 8 Plus.

Stress & anxiety can cause GI issues & diarrhea. Traveling, boarding, house guests, Vet visits, grooming appointments & countless other experiences some of us dogs & cats find pawsitively demanding or traumatic & we can experience wagnificent levels of anxiety.  Other studies have shown that adding a probiotic supplement helped to prevent stress-related gastrointestinal upsets & diarrhea while supporting optimal stool production” in dogs who’ve recently spent time in a kennel or had been rehomed/relocated.

Researchers at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine ran a study to compaw the use of probiotics & the standard antibiotic treatment to treat diarrhea caused by stress colitis (inflammation of the colon) in shelter dogs. They found that the probiotic is an equally effective treatment to the traditional antibiotic regime for the treatment of diarrhea in shelter dogs.

Another 2016 study looked at the emotional & behavioral changes in dogs receiving a probiotic supplement containing the beneficial bacteria Bifidobacterium longum. They  evaluated pawticular behaviors linked to anxiety such as barking, spinning & pacing. They also tracked the dogs’ cortisol levels & heart rate to dogtermine stress levels.  The dogs who were given a probiotic supplement showed a wagnificent decrease in anxious behaviors & other signs of stress, & their cortisol levels & heart rates also improved.  Not only did 90% of the supplemented dogs appeared to be less anxious, 83% had lower salivary cortisol measures & improved heart rate variability, & 75% had lower average heart rates.

What does this growing research tell us?  It proves the health of our GI tract affects our overall physical well-being. Remember, 80% of our immune system is located within our GI tract.

Studies also show that GI health can affect our psychological well-being & behavior. Research shows the flora (microbiota) present in the digestive tract can affect moods & vice versa. It seem pawsitively clear to this dog that adding a probiotic supplement to our diet is a wagnificent way to support good dogs & cats physical, mental & emotional well being.
