Olivia playing with Soup Bone

My HuMom used to give me soup bones to chew on. However, it appeared these delicious treats triggered seizures. We did some sniffing about & discovered that HuMom was right, soup bones are a known trigger because they contain high levels of an amino acid called glutamate (different from MSG).

Neurotransmitters are either excitatory or inhibitory, meaning that the receiving neuron will be either be stimulated to fire or silenced. The main excitatory neurotransmitter is glutamate. So ingesting high concentrations of glutamate contained in a soup bone or broth made from soup bones can raise levels in the brain causing neurons to become hyper-excited & a seizure may result. In humans high levels of glutamate has also been linked to brain fog, migraine headaches, dramatic mood swings, & nervous tics.

Unfortunately most of what we sniffed out was more about humans than dogs, but HuMom isn’t taking any risks. I do have my bone that I play with but it’s was thoroughly cleaned out first by my furriends Dio & Grisham, so that only the bone remains. HuMom then packs it with my liver treats & I have a wooftastic time getting the them out.

Here is a short article about glutamate & epilepsy.

Here is an article about canine diet & epilepsy that discuses glutamate
