Rescued from Puerto Rico

It seems the plight of Puerto Rico has, for the most part, dropped from the headlines. The island is still struggling with power restoration & rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Puerto Rico already has an over population of stray dogs that many rescue groups & shelters have tried to help but since the hurricane, these groups have been overwhelmed.

There have been air lifts to the American mainland. On January 20th, sixty two dogs were flown to Washington D.C. by Lucky Dog Animal Rescue of Arlington, Virginia. They arranged a rescue flight which was donated by Southwest Airlines. They left behind over 14,000 pounds of supplies for pets & people in need.

A month earlier, The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, along with the group “Barks of Hope,” flew a private cargo jet to Puerto Rico & returned with 130 dogs.

This is wooftastic news, however these dogs are a very small percentage of those still in need of help. I’ve sniffed about & have found a sample of Rescue organizations in Puerto Rico.

Second Chance Animal Rescue was founded in 2000. They rescue, rehabilitate, & secure permanent homes for abandoned & abused dogs rescued from the streets of Puerto Rico.

The Sato Project is also dedicated to rescuing abused & abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico. Sato is Puerto Rican slang for a mutt. Since its inception in 2011, The Sato Project has rescued over 2,000 dogs & placed them in loving homes in the mainland U.S.. Since the devastation of Hurricane Maria, The Sato Project has evacuated over 300 dogs to safety & is working to keep families with their beloved pets, & help the many animals left behind in the storm’s aftermath.

All Sato Rescue (ASR) is yet another nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives, & reducing the numbers, of abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico.

Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) of Rincón is an animal welfare organization that services the town of Rincón, Puerto Rico. It began in 1997 by a hand full of devoted volunteers. It’s focus is on eradicating animal overpopulation both through mass sterilization as well as providing workshops in schools in order to educate & involve the community.

The Vieques Humane Society & Animal Rescue (VHSAR) is located on the island of Vieques, off Puerto Rico’s east coast. Established in 1987, VHSAR was officially established as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. They provide animal rescue & veterinary services that include a shelter, a low-cost clinic, & other community-based & educational programs.
